Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to fix separation anxiety?
Every dog is unique and progresses at their own pace. However, generally, it takes some number of months to meet all our goals.
Why do you only work virtually?
Working virtually means that every training session feels like real-life to your dog, in the normal rhythm of the day, which gives us a better picture of how they are progressing. Having a trainer come to your house before an absence sets dogs up differently. House guests are exciting, and watching their family leave alongside a guest can be even harder than a typical day to day absence.
Can you take them and train them yourself and bring them back ready for absences at home?
Unfortunately, no, this method has not been proven successful. The desensitization process does not generalize very well, so each new environment has to be worked from scratch at the dog’s pace.
Do I have to suspend absences outside of training sessions?
Yes, in the short term, all absences are purposeful training sessions, so we can be sure we are keeping your dog as comfortable as possible during absences. This is how we desensitize them to absences. From the time you start training with us, the goal is that your dog never experiences another scary/stress-inducing absence again.
Every single absence, we keep them under threshold and slowly build their confidence and the amount of time they can tolerate being alone. Eventually, you will have enough time built up that you can use your absences to go places like a coffee shop, the post office, or the grocery store. And soon after that, your dog will be ready for spur of the moment, real-life absences.
